The hellenic series
Greece has always been, for Cassou, a nurturing mother and a source of beauty and universal culture. The Hellenic series reveals aspects of this special relationship with Greece. But beware! This is not a travel brochure or anything like that about Greek culture. Above all, these are works by Cassou freely inspired by my studies, my travels, and my encounters.
Icarus saved from the waters
Reinvention of the myth of Icarus where the hero drowns in the Aegean Sea.
Here, Icarus finds salvation thanks to the god.
The La Fontaine series
My fascination with La Fontaine's fables dates back to my childhood. These stories, which were read to me, transported me to a wondrous world where animals were humans like any other. Something essential was unfolding, a captivating suspense followed by a liberating, soothing resolution, far removed from the tragedy experienced by the protagonists. The concision and vigor of the style were already at work, though I couldn't identify or name them at the time.
So far, some forty fables have found a new visual interpretation through my brushes. While these paintings interpret the fables, they also reflect something of my own experience, so that some lend themselves to a double meaning.
La Fontaine wrote his fables to "please while instructing." He was and still is a delight, thanks to his humor, his apparent lightness, the fluidity of his style, the wondrous nature of his subject matter, his free spirit, and his joy and zest for life that shine through in the Fables. Our era so desperately needs a La Fontaine to re-enchant it! My paintings remain true to that spirit.
"L'Âne portant des Reliques"
The politico-judicial series
"Alimentation doctrinaire- Europe- 2023"
Painting inspired by James Ensor's "Doctrinaire Feeding - Belgium 1889"
James Ensor's painting (1889) depicts King Leopold II and his court reading placards outlining the people's demands and defecating on the bourgeoisie, clergy, and soldiers.
My painting, inspired by Ensor's, shows the European elites (elected and unelected) in 2023. They are defecating on the people while sipping champagne. They no longer even occasionally consider the people's demands.
